Lifeguard tryouts in St. Johns County this month

Do you want to become a lifeguard? Tryouts will be held in St. Johns County beginning January 9.

If you are interested in becoming hired as a lifeguard, you must attend an orientation meeting and complete the tryout conducted by the St. Johns County Fire Rescue.

Orientation meetings will be held at the Marine Rescue Division Office on A1A beach Boulevard in St. Augustine on January 9 and 13.

The meeting on January 9th will begin at 10 a.m. The meeting on January 13th will begin at 7 p.m. Tryouts will be held at the Solomon Calhoun Community Center located on Duval Street in St. Augustine.

Television’s New Antiheroes: Creating Sympathy For The Devilish

Jackson “Jax” Teller, the antihero at the heart of FX’s blockbuster biker gang series Sons of Anarchy, is pretty easy to distinguish from a traditional hero. Walters Names Steve Jobs Person of Year

(NewsCore) – Barbara Walters on Wednesday night named Apple co-founder Steve Jobs her “Most Fascinating Person of 2011,” the first time a dead person has featured in her annual list.

In the special on ABC — where Walters ranks her 10 most fascinating people of the year — the 83-year-old veteran broadcaster also tracked the rise and rise of the world’s most famous bridesmaid, Pippa Middleton, and the media storm that surrounded the acquittal of accused murderer Amanda Knox.

But for Walters, the iconic 56-year-old Apple co-founder and former CEO topped her list.

TV companies have a year to pipe down loud ads

LOS ANGELES — Shush, already. That’s the message the Federal Communications Commission is sending with new rules that force broadcast, cable and satellite companies to turn down the volume on blaring TV commercials.

On Tuesday, the FCC passed a set of regulations that will prevent commercials from being louder than the shows around them. It’s all part of the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (or CALM) Act, which President Obama signed into law last December. The rules go into effect a year from now. Companies that don’t comply will face unspecified FCC action.

Thunderous television ads have annoyed viewers for years.
